SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) is made up of individuals whose goal is to promote advances in the treatment and management of Phenylketonuria, with the long-term goal of facilitating the development of a cure. 

Reporting to the Scientific Advisory committee is a Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) that is made up of key scientific thought leaders in PKU and other key scientific areas. The SAC leverages the SAB for consultation and guidance to provide scientific advice, guidance and support to the NPKUA Board and committees. Areas of focus for the committee are as follows:

RESEARCH INITIATIVES
The SAC provides input on the direction of research for PKU.  The SAC prioritizes research initiatives and establishes both long and short-term objectives for PKU research.

GRANT AWARD PROGRAMS
The NPKUA's research grant program supports projects that promote advancements in the treatment and management of PKU, with a long-term goal of facilitating the development of a cure.  The fellowship program facilitates the growth and expansion of young, innovative researchers working in the inherited metabolic disease field.  The SAB goes through a rigorous scientific-based evaluation process each year to select those proposals that meets this funding strategy. 

EDUCATIONAL & OUTREACH
The SAC provides input and guidance for the development of educational materials, public relations, website development and other activities. SAC may review scientific publications related to PKU and shall advise the Board concerning such publications.

COMMUNICATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS
The SAC may contribute to PKU publications that disseminate information on PKU to physicians, health care providers, patients and their families, government and industry. The SAC provides input and/or contributes to regular updates written specifically for the PKU community.

SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS AND CONFERENCES
The SAC provides input during the planning phase and participates in scientific or other conferences sponsored by the NPKUA.
