Meet this month’s community spotlight, August!
August (Auggie) is a 6-year-old who was diagnosed with Hyperphe at 7 days old. He recently started Sephience and loves that it makes his tongue turn yellow (his favorite color!).
Auggie loves working on small engines with his dad and helping change the oil in his mom’s car. He also enjoys spending time outside helping in the yard, mowing and trimming weeds. His favorite activity is riding his four-wheeler while showing off his bright yellow helmet and gloves.
Auggie is currently in first grade, and his teacher created low-protein snack buckets that are available to him throughout the day. On the first day of school, Auggie and his mom taught his classmates about PKU, his special formula and why it is so important. The cafeteria staff also have fun getting creative with Auggie’s medical foods. Some of his favorites are Cambrooke MixQuick pancakes and Eggz.
Auggie has a big support system! His sister helps him make his milk, and his dad plays “vampire” during blood draws. His mom makes most of his meals, while his brother encourages him to drink his milk. His baby sister, meanwhile, usually tries to steal it for herself.
“PKU has introduced us to many amazing people and places!” Auggie’s mom shared. We’re grateful to have Auggie and his family as part of our community. We look forward to seeing him continue to thrive in school and in all the things he enjoys!
