Meet this month’s community spotlight, Susan!
Shuishan (Susan Hu) is an adult living with Classical PKU in Maryland. She currently manages 9 grams of natural protein with Palynziq, along with diet and medical formula. Susan was born in China in 1990 and diagnosed at age one — before newborn screening protocols were implemented. When Susan was eight years old, she and her family moved to Maryland for her dad’s job.
From a young age, Susan loved creativity and wordplay. After high school, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in English and Creative Writing from Mercyhurst University and a Master’s degree in Professional and Technical Writing from Towson University. She now works as a substitute teacher.
Susan has been an active member of the PKU community for most of her life. She has attended the Alliance of PKU Families’ Camp Huber since 1999 and now serves on the executive board as the acting secretary. She is also a member of the Camp Huber planning committee. For her, camp has given her connection, support and lifelong friendships.
When she is not working or volunteering, Susan enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and her cat, Cody. She enjoys cooking new recipes, relaxing with a new crochet or knitting project, and visiting the local library or bookstore for her next book.
We’re proud to have Susan as part of our PKU community!
