Flying with PKU

Published July 9, 2026

Planning a summer trip? If you’re flying with medical formula, low-protein foods, cooling packs or other medically necessary items, a little preparation can help make travel smoother. Here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind before you take off!

  • Medical formula and other medically necessary liquids are allowed in carry-on bags in quantities larger than the standard 3.4-ounce limit. Tell the TSA officer about these items before screening.
  • TSA Cares provides free assistance for travelers with medical conditions. Contact them at least 72 hours before your flight to ask questions or request a Passenger Support Specialist to help you through security.
  • Most U.S. airlines allow an additional carry-on bag for medically necessary supplies at no extra charge. Because policies vary by airline, it’s a good idea to contact your airline before your trip to confirm their procedures and any documentation they recommend bringing.

Safe travels!
